Call for Artists
The Monument Project I: Paper
Over the course of 2012-13, the Peter Potter Gallery will be running The Monument Project, a series of four exhibitions and associated residencies, events and workshops, as well as the gallery’s ongoing archaeological research partnership in the region. This project will be a cumulative exploration of the relevance of the monument to contemporary art, creating original interpretations of monumentality for the 21st century. We now invite proposals from artists for The Monument Project’s first exhibition, in Jan-March 2013: Paper. In this first exhibition, we hope to explore the essential and fragile histories found in paper ephemera.
Written histories rely on ephemera – the process of revealing and exploring the past is dependent on these most vulnerable of artefacts, and most human. We invite artists to submit proposals for an exhibition which will not only explore the historical value of ephemera, but will also be constructed entirely from paper. We are particularly interested in sculptural works/installations which are ambitious in scale and will fully occupy our 20’ square exhibition space.
Paper is a sculptural material with limitless potential. It can be cut, moulded, mashed, ripped, torn, shredded, compressed, carved, layered, dyed, painted, drawn on, varnished, folded or glued. It can be used to create sculpture that is enduring and solid, or the most delicate and vulnerable tissue-thin works, intended only to survive the length of the exhibition. The material and the theme are therefore inseparable here, as both highlight the durability of this fragile material.
This commission will go to the project that shows the greatest originality, sensitivity and ambition, and both established and early career artists are welcomed to apply.
Deadline: Friday 6th April. Please email proposals with C.V. and up to ten images of recent work (or website address) to Kate Kilpatrick: kate.ppgallery@yahoo.co.uk
Artists’ Fee: Approx £1500 (final amount to be confirmed), plus materials budget. Collaborations welcome.
